Defence road map puts onus on satellites, UAVs

The country’s armed forces will focus on building space and unmanned capabilities, apart from miniaturisation, in the next 15 years as part of the efforts to give added teeth to the military operations. This was outlined in the 45 ‐page ‘Indian defence Technology Perspective and Capability Roadmap’ (TPCR) for the 2012 ‐27 period, which was made public a week ago. According to the TPCR, “in the battlefield milieu, information ‐ its integration and conversion into real‐time actionable intelligence ‐ shall provide the winning edge to a Commander”. “The strategic forces need to be facilitated and supported by real‐time information. These will include satellites that produce sub‐metric resolution and are backed by UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) with great staying power in the area of interest,” it noted. The roadmap also pointed that as the world moved towards miniaturisation the benefits of the technology, which ought to lead to the development of microsystems, should play a key role in the development of the navigation systems and warhead guidance.
