NASA’s asteroid mission gets final approval

NASA’s first asteroid sample mission has received the final approval for its ambitious launch in 2016 and is now entering the development and testing phase. The USD one billion OSIRIS‐REx reached a major milestone after it passed a confirmation review called Key Decision Point (KDP)‐C, authorising continuation of the project into the next phase of development. NASA officials reviewed a series of detailed project assessments and authorised the spacecraft’s continuation into the development phase. OSIRIS‐REX will rendezvous with the asteroid Bennu in 2018 and return a sample of it to Earth in 2023.
