The Indian Navy is entering its biggest modernisation phase with the Ministry of Defence approving acquisitions worth Rs 2.73 lakh crore for the next 15 years. Out of this, contracts worth Rs 92,069 crore have already been placed. In a bid to strengthen its foothold in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), ranging from the Malacca Strait in the East to the Gulf of Aden in the West, the Navy is all set to induct nearly 100 more warships in its flotilla including at least one nuclear submarine and two aircraft carriers.
