ISRO to Launch INSAT-4E Soon

The country’s premier space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is currently working on launching the INSAT-4E along with other missions in the coming six months, according to its chairman Mr. A S Kiran Kumar. Speaking on the occasion of World Metrology Day in the city, Mr. Kumar said that the 2,000 kg INSAT-4E, carrying five transponders, would be launched in July or August as the GSAT-6 mission. The satellite will offer a Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (S-DMB) service. To be launched with various optical instruments, the GSAT-6 will also provide other services to mobile phone users and vehicles. The satellite will also have a rubidium atomic clock which will help in several other scientific experiments, Mr. Kumar said. “We are working on prototypes of GSAT 17, 18 and 19 which will have more than 48 transponders,” he said, adding that this was part of ISRO’s aim to reduce the dependence on foreign products. World Metrology Day was celebrated by the Metrology Society of India-Southern Region. An exhibition on the theme ‘Measurements and Light’ held at the Central Manufacturing Technology Institute marked the occasion. The exhibition aims to increase awareness on Metrology and its contribution to the society. Various national institutions including ISRO, CMTI, STQUC-ETDC, NABL and FCRI are participating in the exhibition which will be on till May 22. Mr. S V Gupta, former head of Mass Metrology, NPL India, Mr. R Sadananda Murthy, MD, Sushma Industries, Mr. P V Sashi Kumar, former director of CMTI and Mr. Anil Relia, director, National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration also spoke at the gathering. The speakers emphasised on the accuracy of measurement in global free and fair trade so that it can enhance the confidence among the trade partners in exchange of products. Addressing the gathering Mr. B R Satyan, former director, CMTI, said, “As the Government of India is promoting the ‘Make in India’ concept, youngsters must inculcate the concept of technology in their innovative ideas.”
