Astrosat set to hit orbit by mid-2013

The country’s first dedicated astronomy satellite, Astrosat, will hit the orbit by mid 2013.
Bangalore-headquartered Indian Institute of Astrophysics is leading the project with other premier scientific institutions in the country. The satellite will help broaden coverage of astrophysical objects ranging from the nearby solar system objects to distant stars to objects at cosmological distances. We are at an advanced stage. There are various technologies involved in the satellite, and though most of it has already been integrated, they are being tested as we need to ensure that they are error-free. We can’t risk a single error as that will cost us a lot of tax payers money. The institute is leading the development of Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, one of the instruments of Astrosat, Mr Tushar P Prabhu, dean, faculty of sciences, Indian Institute of Astrophysics told TOI.
