The Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur could get a second maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) facility. Subang Skypark, an aviation company based out of Malaysia, has expressed interest in setting up the project. The first MRO, which is being constructed by Boeing for Air India fleet, is ready for operations. Before the end of the current fiscal, it is likely to commence servicing aircraft. A senior Maharashtra Government official told BusinessLine that Subang Skypark is keen to invest in MIHAN and is scouting for an Indian partner. An Executive Director of the company had already met senior State Government officials and chiefs of aviation companies for the project. The company runs an airport terminal at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport at Subang, located some 25 km from the capital Kuala Lumpur, and is solidly backed by the Malaysian business and political establishment. In Maharashtra, the MRO investment could be over ₹500 crore, the official said. MIHAN had suffered due to land acquisition, power shortages and other infrastructure issues, but with Devendra Fadnavis taking over as Chief Minister, the problems are being sorted out, the official added. Fadnavis being a local MLA from Nagpur is proving advantageous for the project. In mid-2000s, Boeing as a part of a deal with Air India for buying 68 aircraft had committed the MRO with an investment of over $100 million. Today, the machinery in the facility is being tested for various compliance requirements and by March the it is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the official said. Recently, MIHAN has also received clearances from the Union Cabinet to exchange 278 hectares of land reserved for Air Force’s Gajraj project. In return, the State Government is offering 400 hectares of contiguous land in the vicinity to the Air Forces. Additional land means more such customer for MIHAN, the officer said.
