ISRO Units in Dist have Reason to be Happy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With big missions lined up for the immediate future, units of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Thiruvananthapuram have received ample attention in the Union Budget presented on Thursday. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) at Thumba, the lead centre of the space agency for the development of launch vehicles and sounding rockets, has received an allocation of Rs 988.67 crore, including plan outlay of Rs 692.01 crore. The total allocation for VSSC has gone up from Rs 711 crore in the 2013-14 budget. The ISRO Inertial Systems Unit (IISU) at Vattiyoorkavu has received an allocation of Rs 76.88 crore, while the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), one of which is situated at Valiyamala in the district, has been earmarked Rs 278.05 crore, including the plan outlay of Rs 210 crore. The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), the academy at Valiyamala established by ISRO in 2007 to mould space scientists, has received an allocation of Rs 122.50 crore. Busy months lie ahead for ISRO as the list of missions planned include the experimental flight of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk-III (GSLV Mk-III), the heftiest rocket to be built in the country to date. The units in Thiruvananthapuram have a key role to play in all these missions. The GSLV Mk-III project has been allocated Rs 180 crore. The total allocation for the Department of Space in the budget is Rs 7,238 crore, up from Rs 5,172 crore in the previous budget.
