Young Scientists Must Take Lead: Aatre

BANGALORE: India must have a long-term commitment to excelling in smart material technologies, said senior aerospace scientist and former head of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Dr V K Aatre. Addressing the smart materials community at the J N Tata Auditorium at the Indian Institute of Science, Dr Aatre said the country cannot aim for technology advancements by running small projects. “We have a long way to go to claim technological excellence. We haven’t arrived yet and the journey has only just begun. We need to have more projects and young scientists should take the lead. We have made some inroads in the field of smart materials and what we do from here will shape our future,” said Dr Aatre, who was felicitated on turning 75 recently. Speaking on the occasion, Dr K G Narayanan, former DRDO chief adviser, credited Dr Aatre with pioneering India’s electronic warfare systems. “In addition to developing some state-of-the-art underwater naval systems, Dr Aatre taught DRDO the art of matrix management,” Dr Narayanan said. Dr Kota Harinarayana, former director of Aeronautical Development Agency, recalled Dr Aatre’s commitment to converting technology developments into aerospace products.
