Mr Sudhir Mishra to replace Mr Pillai as BrahMos chief

Top missile scientist Mr Sudhir Mishra, who is an old hand at Russian projects, has been chosen as the new head of the Indo-Russian BrahMos corporation, replacing Mr S Pillai who had been given several service extensions by the previous government. Mr Mishra, who is currently Head, Programme Office (Missiles), DRDO, is set to take over the corporation — the most successful missile company of the nation that has orders worth thousands of crores on its list — in August and has said that his top priorities will be further indigenisation of the system and timely deliveries. “My focus shall be to indigenise the system as much as possible. Also, we have received many orders from the services and we should be in a position to deliver them not on but ahead of schedule. These shall be my main objectives,” the highly rewarded scientist, who has received the PM’s award for excellence in 2009, told The Indian Express Mr Mishra also praised his predecessor, saying that Mr Pillai has been a great leader and his mentor at the DRDO. He also said that he would work towards more variants of the missile system, as per the demands of the armed forces. The BrahMos corporation has supplied missile systems to the Army and Navy and is currently working on the air delivered version that can be fired from a Su 30 MKI aircraft. The corporation is also working on a next generation hyper sonic version of the missile. The one sticking point has been that export orders have not yet fructified for the system, with even co-partner Russia not putting in orders. These challenges shall now be dealt by Mr Mishra, who has till now been responsible for steering and coordinating all strategic missiles programmes as well as international joint missiles development programmes with Russia, Israel and France. Mr Mishra has also had prior experience with Brahmos as Programme Manager in Project PJ-10.
